Water abstraction licensing changes

Deadline extension for previously exempt abstraction activity licence applications

The Environment Agency is pleased to announce we have secured a short extension for submitting applications for previously exempt water abstractions activities. The new deadline for submitting a successful application has been moved from the 31 of December 2019 to the 30 June 2020.

If you are able to pass this information on to your parish residents that may be affected, this would be most welcome. We would like to provide early awareness of the extension, to help those needing to act take advantage and secure their water needs by completing an application. Your support would be much appreciated.

Activities that were previously exempt that now require a licence are: all types of irrigation including trickle; dewatering; transfer into managed wetland systems; warping; abstraction into and between internal drainage districts. A licence is required if the maximum quantity abstracted on any single day exceeds 20m3.

The new regulations will enable the Environment Agency to better manage water resources effectively now and in the future; protecting the environment from damage that can be caused if too much water is abstracted and reducing the risk of major water shortages.

We are writing directly to businesses and individuals that we have identified as potential applicants for a new water abstraction licence and we are actively engaging with our partners such as the National Farmers Union and Natural England. We are also raising awareness of these new licence requirements via our local and national twitter accounts @envagencymids and @envagency. We would be very appreciative if you are able to share this information with your constituents where appropriate.

Attached is a briefing document with further details including a helpline that people can contact us on if they have any questions.

If you’d like to discuss this or any other matter relevant to your parish please don’t hesitate to contact me on LNCorrespondence@environment-agency.gov.uk
